NIBBIAIA
Nibbiaia. Obviously
the name of the village comes from «kite»,in fact it seems that
the symbol of this village was a tree, around which there used to circle
this kind of well-known rapacious birds called kites. Nibbiaia doesn't have
ancient traditions. Its church, devoted to St Joseph was
erected in the first half of the 19th century , perhaps about
1835. The parish priest, father Giuseppe Caramelli, founded the baptismal
font shortly
after.
The bildings also are relatively recent and the lands around were and
are still mostly emphyteutical of the Charity House of Mercy in
Pisa.
This little village is called «High Nibbiaia», or"Solitone", which is the centre,
as well as «big Stone» or «Barnyard of the Old woman» and it was inhabited by shepherds.
The road that takes to Nibbiaia from Castelnuovo was registerd in
1795. The road called «Vajolo», which connects
Nibbiaia with the main road SS1 Aurelia was built later.
In 1822 the inhabitants sent in the Municipality of Rosignano an
application for a
public fountain. The Municipality agreed and the execution
of the fountain was decided on September 18 th 1823.
In 1827 the Municipality took care of a first restoration of the
fountain which,
during one century, suffered several modifications and
vicissitudes.
In 1843 the municipal doctor for Castelnuovo and
Nibbiaia was appointed and in 1840 Nibbiaia had the first teacher of primary school.
In 1907 the Menicanti family from Livorno, who have many possessions at Nibbiaia,
built a large building at their own expense and
donated it so that it could be used as a school, in
memory of a son of theirs who died young, therefore the school was
named «Ottorino Menicanti».
In the outskirts of Nibbiaia there are several springs of mineral
waters like «Occhibolleri», «Padula» and «Debbione»;
these waters have therapeutic and purgative properties.
Over the years, certainly more than a hundred and fifty years, the different places
which were born isolated have formed the present look of the
village of Nibbiaia, in fact new building were built along the main
guiding roads.
From Nibbiaia it is possible to enjoy a wide and wonderful view of the Tuscan Archipelago
as far as the isle of Corsica. |
